In the Beginning.....

In 1985 David Philips wanted somewhere in Sunbury to train his dog. David approached Peter Wood, a qualified instructor with the German Shepherd Dog Club Inc. to assist with forming a club. Eighteen people came to the first training session, and so the club was born.

A lack of training facilities did not deter anyone thus training commenced on a vacant piece of land in Evans Street that is now the site of Sunbury Shopping Square, and an old wooden Scout Hall was used as the clubroom.

The Sunbury & District Obedience Dog Club currently trains at Boardman Reserve in Mitchells Lane, Sunbury and has done so for many years.

Over the years the club has enjoyed participating in a variety of community events including local Fairs and Agricultural Shows.

In 1989 the club introduced Agility training, teaching dogs to jump hurdles, run through tunnels, weave through poles and use various other pieces of agility equipment. Members compete in agility trials and have had great success at the Royal Melbourne Show and various Regional and National Trials.

Many club members regularly participate in Obedience Trials throughout Victoria and SDODC hosts an annual Obedience Trial on our own ground, over the years club members have attained all levels of obedience and agility titles with their dogs.

In 2005 the club adopted the positive reinforcement method of training, where handlers are enjoying a gentler, easier way to train their dog.

All our instructors are volunteers and the club and members are grateful for their support and dedication.

Since its inception, the club has guided and nurtured many fine members with their dogs to achieve their own level of success whether it be in obedience, agility or socialization.

Life Membership is awarded to a select group of dedicated people who have selflessly donated a tremendous amount of their time and expertise to encourage the success of club members and secure the future of the club.
